Google Project - The Beatles Evaluation

The Google logo I designed was all about The Beatles. My initial idea was to either draw inspiration from either the yellow submarine or the Abbey Road crossing picture - both of which are two iconic images that have strong connotations to the band, however the former was already drawn up by another person doing the same project, so I had to adapt and use my second idea. I think the logo turned out well - those that gave me feedback had known the logo was to do with The Beatles straight away, so I think it was effective in that way.

If I could improve the work I would take more care when writing, as the lettering on the word "Google" looks a little sloppy and mismatched. Overall I am content with how the logo turned out, seeing as it was recognisable, but there is always room for a lot more improvement in the way I had drawn it.

Production Report

What is a serif font and San serif font?
A serif font is when the font has accents on the end, such as decorative attributes in order to improve the appearance. A San serif font is a font without any decorative features.

Name a San serif font and a serif font?
Serif: Times New Roman
San serif: Helvetica

What does CMYK and RGB stand for?
And why are they different?

RGB is for the primary colours red, green, and blue. This is related to light rather than colour, and is used on screens for electronics.
CMYK stands for the colours cyan, magenta, yellow, black. This theory is related to colour, and is used for anything that prints.

The following file formats are important within the industry. What do the following formats stand for and in what context would you use them?

JPEG -
Context: JPEGs are mostly used for photographs or images on websites.

PDF - Portable Document Format
Context: PDFs are used for word documents online, which can be accessible anywhere with a PDF reader.

GIF - Graphics Interchange Format
Context: GIFs are moving images made of frames, and are often used in animations and small film clips.

EPS - Encapsulated PostScript
Context: Used to describe an image or drawing in a PostScript document.

PNG - Portable Network Graphics
Context: PNGs are used to create moving images similar to GIFs, and also used after photo editing.

What is the minimum resolution to scan artwork for print? For a website? Why?
The minimum for a website is 72 dpi (dots per inch) and for print, the minimum is 300 dpi.

If producing a vector based logo for a client which program would you use? Why?
Illustrator as it deals with mathematical shapes for graphics and can handle large amounts of data.

If you're improving the quality of an old, faded and damaged photograph. Which program would you use? Why (which tools)?
I would use Photoshop and the filter tools, along with dodge and sharpen to improve the image. It might also help to use the colour replace tool.

If you are producing an 8 page magazine for an assignment which program would you use and why?
I would use Illustrator as it is the easiest to arrange layouts and handle pages of data.

Bjork

The card I drew today in the challenge was Bjork. I tried to use bright colours and abstract-looking lettering in order to portray Bjork's unique, fun sound. The accents over the "o" was drawn to look like an aurora borealis, which is seen in her home country of Iceland. The pom-pom hat for the "r" and the swan dress for the "j" was just two of Bjork's iconic, crazy outfits she wore in public. Overall I am happy with the ideas I used, although I wish I could have concentrated more on perfecting the drawing, as I feel it looked a little childish overall. However, this could also be used as an "excuse" to reflect Bjork's innocent sound and look.

Dynamic Freeze

For my assignment I had to create a poster for the event Dynamic Freeze. I used one of my original layout ideas of using loud, energetic colours and the use of a silhouette in the center as a focal point of the poster to catch the eye of whoever reads it. I think I executed that well, however if I had more time I would refine some parts of the poster, such as making background colours match the logo I designed as I feel it conflicts with the colour scheme. I would also choose text that would stand out more, and possibly make it bigger as I feel the poster is a little bare, though I was afraid of over-crowding it on top of the colours I used. Overall, I think the job was well-thought, but poorly executed. I hope that, if given extra time, the quality would improve.

Layout Inspiration

Despite the terrible drawing, these three images I found gave me ideas for the layout and design that I could possibly focus on during the creation process of my Dynamic Freeze poster. I was looking for interesting and unique images with energy and a certain "wow factor" that would make someone stop to look at it, which is what I hope the end result of the poster will have. The first image was taken from a music video I had seen, and as written, features a woman with a dramatic look. The second, I found when browsing online. I really thought the neon stripes were very different, and made an interesting shape when put against a black background. The third and final image was taken from a live photo of a band I listen to, and I thought the harsh lighting brought an energy and vibrance to the image with a simple silhouette in the center, and I thought this could be highly effective in the poster design.

Dynamic Freeze Logo

Today I drafted some logo ideas for the Dynamic Freeze poster competition. I tried to incorporate a lot of sporty designs with a lot of colour to project energy. So far I like the bottom two and the 3D block design on the right the most, however I do also like the logo featuring the 3 black rectangles with the pink font, as it gives the logo a "neon" feel.

Liquify

For the last part of today's lesson I used liquify. I took a picture of Paris Hilton posing in a swimsuit and altered her body drastically, making her look a lot bigger and disfiguring her face. I also used pucker and bloat.

Colour Replacement Tool (2)

I took a picture of Nancy Spungen and imported it into Photoshop. The picture was already black & white so I didn't need to change it. Then I went into the colour replacement tool (off of the paint brush) and began colouring her lips, hair, and sweater. I struggled with the hair the most as it was very light and blended in with the background. As with the lips I was not sure where to stop due to the shadowing. However I think I learned a lot with this tool and would like to do more.

Colour Replace

I gave (half) the Simpson family dark skin with the colour replace tool in Photoshop, and also changed their house in the process. I also made their dog yellow, giving him a "Simpson" look. It was very interesting to play around with this tool, and the cut picture really shows the contrast between the original and edited photo.

Photoshop Adjustments

Today I learned how to use quick adjustment filters in Photoshop to change the look of a certain photo we chose from National Geographic. I primarily used the curves and levels filter, then expanded out to use hue/saturation, channel mixer etc. These are all the different outcomes I had when using different filters. My favourite is the hue/saturation photo, because it totally changes the feel of the photo, which was originally quite warm and colourful and now looks as if it could be taken in the snow.

Effects

I used the shape and line tools, learning which keys do what (i.e holding shift will create a perfectly sized square/triangle/star etc) and what kind of effects can be used on them. I also learned how to place text on lines that aren't straight and how to thread text so it flows through separate columns, as seen in entry two.
