Guess Who? Progression & Final Piece

To put the final touches on the picture, I covered the unwanted areas of the picture with the required gradient and yellow border, which made my image fit in with the other Guess Who? characters. I found that the little details made this picture 'come alive' and resemble myself accurately, such as the creases in the skin as I smiled, the structure of my nose and the strands in my hair. Overall, the picture turned out better than I expected and gave me new skills to use in photo editing that I will carry through to my other projects.

The colouring process required a lot of back-and-forth checking to make sure that the image looked as close to the original photograph as possible. The highlights in my hair was achieved by picking a lighter colour than the base and then turning the opacity down so that it blended in with the hair properly. There was a similar effect used to create the reflection in the lens of the glasses, except with a blue gradient.

After tracing over every defining area of my face, I used the swatches available to get the best colour possible to match my skin tone and hair. For other parts of the picture, such as the lips or glasses, I used the eyedropper tool to get the most accurate colour.

Starting off with the pen tool, I traced over the defining areas of my face that would make up the detail that would show the resemblance of my face in the final piece (i.e eyebrows, lips, glasses, jawline etc). I used white initially as it was the colour that stood out from the rest of my face, and showed me which parts were left to trace. 

I started off with a raw, untouched photo of myself (taken from an iPad) and uploaded it to the computer, and began editing in Adobe Illustrator.

Ghostbusters Volume 6

I enjoy how the illustrator of the book has been selective with the use of vibrant colour; it is a common theme throughout the book where one segment of a page will feature an overwhelming use of bright colours and electric hues. The book utilizes a comic book style typography, where text bubbles are used throughout to show character's in the middle of conversation. This is something I may not necessarily use as it's not a particular style I find appealing. The characters in the book are drawn in an over-the-top, caricatured style which is probably reflective of the young target audience the author had in mind when writing the book. This could be a possible influence on my own design if I choose to appeal to young children. The illustrator possibly drew the design, scanned, then edited the sketches digitally.

Albert Road

-       A strip of bars and pubs best suited for a night out with friends, especially those from the ages 18-30. This is important in my “A-Z of places to be” for Portsmouth as it is a popular destination for those seeking a good night out.

-       Love Albert Road Day is dedicated to the road, and more than 80,000 people turned up in 2009.

Bowlplex

-       I chose Bowlplex because it provided an alternative to a night out to a club or bar and can provide entertainment for all ages.

-       Features an arcade and over 18s area.

The Cellars

-       Due to the part music and social drinking has in a young person’s social life I thought the Cellars was an ideal venue to add to my graphic, due to it also being a popular spot on an average night out in Portsmouth as well as being one of the more well known pubs.

-       Local bands play almost every night.

Dominoes

-       Generally due to a lack of venues to add I thought the next best thing was to add Dominoes Pizza as takeaways are popular after a night out or in. With pizza being a more popular option for the younger audience I thought this was the best choice.

Eastney Swimming Pool

-       As an alternative to drinking or partying, Eastney Swimming Pool can provide a place to go on the weekend to have fun with friends that want to see everything Portsmouth has to offer, besides clubs and pubs.

Fratton Park      

-       As a Portsmouth landmark, I felt Fratton Park was something younger people would want to see, as it was the home of the city’s football team. This also provided an alternative for those who are interested in sports.

-       This restaurant is very popular and is frequented by the younger crowd, which is the main reason why this is on my list of places to go.

-       Celebrities such as Ed Sheeran have been given a Nando’s ‘high-five’ card for promoting their business, entitling them to unlimited free food for up to five people any time they visit the restaurant for a year.

Odeon Cinema

The Pyramids Centre

-       Providing both an indoor swimming centre as well as a venue for concerts and live music, the Pyramids provide plenty of entertainment for the public, which is why it is going on the A-Z list.

-       Also has a spa, gym, children’s area, and live music venue.

(Gunwharf) Quays

-       - This is a popular shopping destination in Portsmouth and would no doubt be of interest to my target audience due to the vast number of clothing shops, restaurants, clubs and other venues available at this area.

-       Gunwharf Quays is home to the Spinakker Tower.

Mesh Tool

I experimented with the mesh tool, using rotates and scaling to achieve this shape from a line of four rectangles and selecting bits of the shape to manipulate.
