Inspiring Artists

For the Urban Juicer 'Juice Squad' challenge I have been tasked with designing two or more characters that will join the group, which I need to find artists to inspire me.

Andrew Hussie

The first artist to inspire me when it comes to creating characters is Andrew Hussie, who writes, draws and animates the Homestuck webcomic series. I enjoy the characters he's created as they look fun and quirky with some really unique elements which I think can really help inspire me to make my characters stand out.

Andy Ristaino
Andy Ristaino is the lead artist for Adventure Time, an animated children's television series on Cartoon Network. As you can see, he uses bright colours to define each character, which creates some striking visuals when mixed with the use of different shapes. I think these images could help me when trying to evoke the buzz words, especially those relating to the fresh, bright, refreshing, and tasty feeling the company wants to come across with in their products.

Matt Groening
As the creator of arguably the most recognised family on TV, Matt Groening was an easy choice when it came for inspiration on creating characters that are targeted to children. One thing that I like the most is how it's successful in not just English-speaking countries, and the choice of the yellow skin colour could be a helpful factor in this, as many families can see themselves in each character. I will definitely mix up colour choices when it comes to the actual design of the characters, and this will be a major influence.

The Beatles Google Project (gif)

To create this gif I used cartoon images of the Beatles band members, moved them around the canvas and used the "tween" tool to loop the images, making them appear as if they were floating around. After doing this, I used the paint bucket tool to edit the background and I used different colours to represent the 'psychedelic' connotations the band had. Overall I think I represented them well, and if I could re-do the work again I would give myself more room to edit the feet, making them walk across the zebra crossing instead, which I feel would look more dynamic.
